Discover Mesquite

Centuries before American settlement, the open prairie at Mesquite was a trading ground for Native peoples. The Ionies lived near present Fort Worth, the Tawakoni in present Dallas, and the Caddo farmed the Mesquite land. From 1680 to 1790 the three peoples held a yearly tournament and trading fair after the harvest. In 1871 David Walker Florence and Julia Beaty Florence started the Florence Ranch Homestead on what is now Barnes Bridge Road. It grew from 207.5 acres to 730 by 1892, and the house is now a museum.

More about Mesquite

Mesquite was founded on March 14, 1873, on the Texas and Pacific Railway between Dallas and Shreveport and named for Mesquite Creek. It was incorporated on December 3, 1887, with J.E. Russell as mayor. In its early years the area was known for outlaws. The train robber Sam Bass held up a train in downtown Mesquite in 1878 but got away with only $152, missing the $30,000 the express agent had hidden in an unused potbelly stove. The Mesquiter, founded in 1882 by R.S. Kimbrough, became Dallas County's longest-running newspaper. The town prospered as a farming community, shipping cotton, hay, corn and sugar beets by rail, and it stayed agricultural until the suburban boom after World War II. In 1946 Charlie Columbus McNally founded the Mesquite Rodeo, one of the few rodeos with a permanent home. Sources Wikipedia: Mesquite, Texas
