Discover Irving

The Irving area began in 1889 as a place called Gorbit, renamed Kit in 1894. By the late 19th century it had churches, two cotton gins, a blacksmith shop and a general store. J.O. "Otto" Schulze and Otis Brown founded the town of Irving in 1903. The name is believed to have been chosen because the writer Washington Irving was a favorite of Netta Barcus Brown. The district's public schools date to the founding of the Kit and Lively schools in 1909, and Irving was incorporated on April 14, 1914, with Otis Brown as its first mayor.
