Discover Richardson

Migrants from Kentucky and Tennessee settled near present Richardson in the 1840s, and before the Civil War a small settlement called Breckenridge grew up near today's Richland College. In 1873 the Houston and Texas Central Railway built a depot northwest of Breckenridge, bought land for a townsite from two local landowners and began selling lots in 1874. The town was named for the railroad's secretary, Alfred S. Richardson.

More about Richardson

In 1908 the Texas Electric Railway, the Interurban, connected Richardson with Denison, Waco, Corsicana and Dallas, and by 1910 the town had about 600 people. A red brick schoolhouse built in 1914 now houses the offices of the Richardson school district. The Red Brick Road, today's Greenville Avenue, was finished in 1924 and brought more traffic, people and higher property values, and the town incorporated and elected a mayor in 1925. It had about 740 residents in 1940. After World War II Richardson grew rapidly, to about 1,300 by 1950. The 1950s brought the Richardson office of Collins Radio, Central Expressway, a police department, shopping centers and many new homes, and Texas Instruments opened offices on the city's southern border in 1956, bringing big gains in land values and population. The 1960s brought new parks and the founding of what became the University of Texas at Dallas. Sources Wikipedia: Richardson, Texas
