Alexander McRae Dechman founded the town as Dechman in 1863, naming it after Big Prairie, Ohio. He had lived near Fort Belknap in Young County, and the 1860 slave schedule lists him as holding four enslaved people. In 1863 he traded a broken-down wagon, an ox team and $200 in Confederate money for 239.5 acres east of the Trinity River and 100 acres of timber on the west side. He went back to his family in Birdville and then into the Civil War, and in 1867 he filed a 50-acre town plat with Dallas County. Yellow fever drove his family from Houston to Bryan.

More about Grand Prairie

In 1876 Dechman traded half his prairie land to the Texas and Pacific Railway to bring the line through, and the railroad named its depot Dechman, so he moved there from Bryan. His son Alexander already ran a trading post and farm in the town. The Rev. Andrew Hayter founded the area's first church, the Good Hope Cumberland Sabbath School, in 1870. It is now West Fork United Presbyterian Church. The post office opened in 1877 as Deckman, because postal officials could not read the handwriting on the application. The railroad meanwhile used the name Grand Prairie, from maps of the 1850s that labeled the land between Dallas and Fort Worth "the grand prairie of Texas," and the Post Office adopted that name to end the confusion. Grand Prairie was incorporated as a city in 1909. Since World War I it has had a long history in the defense and aviation industry, including the Vought plant on Jefferson Avenue.
