Discover Carrollton

The area was first settled in 1842 on land within the Peters Colony grant; Wikipedia's account names Jared Ford and William and Mary Larner as the first settlers. In 1844 the A.W. Perry family claimed land around Trinity Mills, where they built a mill with Wade H. Witt. A group of families in the northeast, known as the English colony, included large landowners such as the Furneaux, Jackson, Morgan and Rowe families. Carrollton was most likely named for Carrollton, Illinois, the former home of many of these settlers, which in turn was named for Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

More about Carrollton

The community lived entirely by farming until the Dallas-Wichita Railroad was built through Trinity Mills in 1878. Jay Gould extended the line to Denton in 1880 and sold it to the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad in 1881. By 1885 Carrollton had flour mills, cotton gins, two churches, a school and 150 people. The St. Louis Southwestern Railway, the Cotton Belt, crossed the Katy there in 1888, and the town became a shipping center for livestock, cotton, cottonseed and grain, passing Trinity Mills. Carrollton was incorporated in 1913, with W.F. Vinson as mayor. A gravel industry that began in 1912 had made it a "grain and gravel" town by the late 1940s, and it also had a brick plant and dairies. National Metal Products arrived in 1946, and the city grew rapidly after World War II. Sources Wikipedia: Carrollton, Texas
