The Potawatomi lived in the Chicago area in the 18th century. The first known permanent settler was Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, a trader of African descent, perhaps from Saint-Domingue, who settled in the 1780s and is called the Founder of Chicago. The U.S. Army built Fort Dearborn in 1803. The Potawatomi destroyed it in 1812, and after the 1833 Treaty of Chicago they were forced west of the Mississippi.
The Town of Chicago was organized on August 12, 1833, with about 200 people, and the city was incorporated on March 4, 1837. For decades it was the fastest-growing city in the world. The first railroad and the Illinois and Michigan Canal opened in 1848, linking the Great Lakes to the Mississippi, and that year the Chicago Board of Trade was founded. Abraham Lincoln was nominated for president in Chicago in 1860, at a convention hall called the Wigwam. In 1856 the city began the country's first comprehensive sewer system and raised much of downtown to a new grade with jackscrews. The Great Chicago Fire of October 8, 1871, burned an area about 4 miles long and a mile wide. At least 300 people died and more than 100,000 were left homeless. Chicago rebuilt in steel and stone, and in 1885 it put up what is described as the world's first skyscraper. In 1900, to keep sewage out of Lake Michigan, its drinking-water source, the city reversed the flow of the Chicago River through the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. Sources Wikipedia: Chicago
