Discover Palatine

The first European American settler in Palatine is generally thought to be George Ela, who built a log cabin in the area later called Deer Grove. He was among the first wave of pioneers to come to northern Illinois after the Black Hawk War, and Ela Road on the town's western edge is named for him. Palatine is thought to be named for a town in New York.

More about Palatine

The Village of Palatine was founded in 1866 around a station on the new Chicago and North Western Railway, and Joel Wood, who surveyed and laid out the village, is called its founder and has a downtown street named for him. A short-line railroad, the Palatine, Lake Zurich and Wauconda, was built in 1911, began full passenger service to Wauconda in 1912 and carried visitors to Dr. Wilson's Deer Grove Park, but after financial troubles and road improvements it closed in 1924. Palatine was home to the Cook County Fair from 1914 to 1931, and the old fairgrounds are now the Fairgrounds Park subdivision. In 1920 the Indian Fellowship League held its first American Indian Day celebration at Camp Reinberg in Palatine, and the Daily Herald reported that 60,000 people came, jamming the highways. The town's first suburban subdivision, Palanois Park, was built mostly after World War II, and Palatine has grown rapidly since the 1970s as part of Chicago's suburban expansion.
