Before the 1940s German settlers had moved into the area west of Roselle Road and north of Golf Road, then called Wildcat Grove, but it remained sparsely populated until farmers bought land there in the 1940s. In 1954 Sam and Jack Hoffman, a father and son who ran a construction company, bought 160 acres and began building the homes that started the community bearing their name, and as residents moved in they voted to incorporate the Village of Hoffman Estates on September 23, 1959.
The opening of the Northwest Tollway made Schaumburg Township attractive to Chicago commuters, and annexations in the early 1960s more than doubled the village's area. The opening of Woodfield Mall in neighboring Schaumburg in 1971 made the area a major business center, and an attempt in the early 1980s to rename the village East Barrington failed in a residents' vote. In the 1990s the 750-acre Prairie Stone Business Park was developed between Illinois Routes 59 and 72 and Interstate 90, and in 1993 Sears, Roebuck and Company moved its headquarters there from the Sears Tower in Chicago.
