Westminster was founded in 1870 by the Rev. Lemuel Webber as a Presbyterian temperance colony and named for the Westminster Assembly of 1643, which set out the basic tenets of the Presbyterian faith. In its early years farmers refused to harvest grapes because they associated them with alcohol. In the late 1800s dairy farms shared the land with fields of walnuts, strawberries, celery and lima beans, which gave way to sugar beets around 1900. When tariff changes and beet pests brought down the Southern California sugar beet industry, goldfish farms took their place. The shift from farms to suburbs was delayed by the Depression, the 1933 earthquake and a severe flood in 1938.
In 1947 Westminster was the site of Mendez v. Westminster, a landmark federal case brought by the family of Sylvia Mendez against several school districts, including Westminster's, that challenged the segregation of Mexican American students in Orange County schools. The ruling led to the end of school segregation in California and is considered an important forerunner of Brown v. Board of Education. Westminster was incorporated in 1957 with 10,755 residents. It was first named Tri-City, as it was meant to join Westminster, Barber City and Midway City, but Midway City refused, and the new city, which absorbed Barber City in its western part, voted five months later to take the name Westminster. In the 1970s the city drew a large population of Vietnamese refugees after the Vietnam War. Sources Wikipedia: Westminster, California
