Discover Brea

The Brea area was part of the homeland of the Tongva, who kept trade and travel routes among their villages and with neighboring peoples, and the nearest known village site is Hutuknga. On July 29, 1769, the Portola expedition camped in Brea Canyon near a large Native village and a pool of clean water. Most of the present city lay within the Mexican Rancho San Juan Cajon de Santa Ana, and after California passed to the United States, the title proceedings of 1851 and the drought of 1860 led most rancho owners to sell.

More about Brea

In the 1880s northern Orange County turned to agriculture, especially Valencia oranges, which grew well in the cool foothills, and oil from nearby fields was burned in "smudging" to protect the trees from frost, leaving a grimy fog. In 1894 Abel Stearns sold 1,200 acres west of Olinda to the new Union Oil Company of California, and by 1898 wooden derricks covered the hills of the Brea-Olinda Oil Field. The village of Olinda grew in Carbon Canyon, and the baseball great Walter Johnson grew up there working in the oil fields. In 1908 the village of Randolph, named for the railway engineer Epes Randolph, was founded south of Brea Canyon for oil workers. Olinda and Randolph grew together, and on January 19, 1911, the town's map was filed under the name Brea, Spanish for natural asphalt or tar. With 752 people, Brea was incorporated on February 23, 1917, as Orange County's eighth city. As oil production declined, lemon and orange groves spread, and in the 1920s the chamber of commerce promoted "Oil, Oranges, and Opportunity." Sources Wikipedia: Brea, California
