The Temecula Valley was home to people now generally known as Luiseno, after Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, founded in 1798. Seven Luiseno bands lived there before contact, the Pechanga, La Jolla, Soboba, Pala, Rincon, Pauma and San Luis Rey. The Pechanga believe their ancestors have lived in the valley for more than 10,000 years and that life on Earth began there, though ethnologists date their arrival later. The name comes from Temeekunga, "the place of the sun." The first recorded Spanish visit was in October 1797, when Father Juan Norberto de Santiago and Captain Pedro Lisalde noted "Temecula ... an Indian village." Little is known of the early 1800s because Temecula's records were lost in the fire after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
In 1839 Pio Pico, who oversaw the secularization of Mission San Luis Rey, asked for Temecula's land for himself. The governor gave him temporary control, but after he was removed for mistreating the Luiseno, he still claimed the land, and in November 1840 armed Luiseno threatened an uprising unless he removed his cattle, forcing him out. Mexican grants followed: Rancho Temecula to Felix Valdez, Rancho Pauba to Vicente Moraga in 1844, Rancho Little Temecula to the Luiseno Pablo Apis in 1845, one of the few former mission converts to receive a grant, and Rancho Santa Rosa to Juan Moreno in 1846. During the Mexican-American War, after the Battle of San Pasqual in December 1846, Jose Lugo and a party of Cahuilla pursued the Luiseno into the valley in January 1847 and killed a reported 40 to 100 of them near today's Vail Lake Dam. A treaty signed at the Magee Store in Temecula in 1852 was never ratified by the U.S. Senate. Sources Wikipedia: Temecula, California
