Discover Hemet

The Hemet area was long the territory of the Soboba and Cahuilla peoples. In the early 19th century Mission San Luis Rey used the land, then called Rancho San Jacinto, for cattle ranching, and after Mexican independence the settler Jose Antonio Estudillo received the Rancho San Jacinto Viejo land grant in 1842. The United States annexed California in 1848.

More about Hemet

In 1887, during the first great Southern California land boom, W.F. Whittier and E.L. Mayberry founded the Lake Hemet Water Company and the Lake Hemet Land Company, planning to dam the San Jacinto River to irrigate the valley. They named the town Hemet in November 1893, and in 1895 they completed Hemet Dam as a private project, creating Lake Hemet and giving the arid valley the reliable water that made it an agricultural region. By 1894 the town had a newspaper, the Hemet News, several general stores, the largest being Heffelfinger and Company, which filled a whole block, a drugstore, blacksmith and harness shops, real estate offices and lumberyards. Its finest building was the two-story Hotel Mayberry, with running water, baths and electric lights from the company's own plant, and John McCool's $20,000 brick flour mill, the only one in the area, could grind 50 barrels a day. Hemet was incorporated in January 1910, when 130 of its 177 residents voted in favor and 33 against. Sources Wikipedia: Hemet, California
