Discover Conway

Conway was founded by Asa P. Robinson, who came to the area soon after the Civil War as chief engineer of the Little Rock-Fort Smith Railroad, now part of the Union Pacific. Part of his pay was the deed to a square mile of land near the old settlement of Cadron. When the railroad came through, he deeded a small tract back for a depot, laid out a townsite around it and named it Conway Station in honor of a famous Arkansas family. At first it had two small stores, two saloons, a depot, some temporary housing and a post office.

More about Conway

In 1878 Father Joseph Strub of the Holy Ghost Fathers arrived in Arkansas. A native of Alsace-Lorraine who had been expelled from Prussia during the Kulturkampf in 1872, he had settled in Pittsburgh and founded Duquesne University there in October 1878, but after difficulties with Bishop John Tuigg he left for Conway later that month. In 1879 he persuaded the railroad to deed 200,000 acres north of the Arkansas River to the Holy Ghost Fathers to found the St. Joseph Colony, including land for St. Joseph Catholic Church, and the railroad offered land at 20 cents an acre to German immigrants. Strub wrote The Guiding Star for the St. Joseph Colony to attract German Catholics, describing the area and how to travel there from Europe, and by 1889 more than 100 German families had settled in Conway, giving it many German street and business names. On April 10, 1965, an F4 tornado struck Conway, killing six people and injuring 200. Sources Wikipedia: Conway, Arkansas
