Oxford, in Calhoun, Talladega and Cleburne counties, was founded in the early 1850s and in 1852 became the first city in Calhoun County to be incorporated. Its name came from a narrow crossing of Choccolocco Creek where farmers could ford their cattle.
The area known as the Mooree Quarter, once part of Oxford, was incorporated on August 16, 1899, as Hobson City, named for a naval hero of the Spanish-American War. It became only the second town in the United States, after Eatonville, Florida, with an all-Black government, and its population was at first almost entirely Black. Since 1970 Oxford has annexed large areas to the south and west, including the communities of Coldwater and Bynum, so that a city once entirely in Calhoun County now reaches into Talladega and Cleburne counties.
