Ohatchee, in Calhoun County, is where Andrew Jackson prepared for the Battle of Talladega in the Creek War. Nearby stood Fort Strother, his headquarters in 1813 and 1814, where he cared for the Creek infant Lyncoya, orphaned at the Battle of Tallushatchee in November 1813, before sending him to the Hermitage.
In 1863 and 1864 Alfred A. Janney built a furnace to make pig iron for the Confederacy. On July 14, 1864, about 300 Confederate cavalry under General James H. Clanton tried to protect the Janney and Crowe ironworks but were overwhelmed by Union cavalry under General Lovell H. Rousseau in the Battle of Ten Islands, and the Union force destroyed both works. Janney Furnace never went into production; locals praise its construction, said to have been done by enslaved workers. The site is now a county park with a Civil War and Native American museum. Ohatchee was incorporated in 1956. On March 25, 2021, an EF3 tornado struck the town and killed six residents.
