Munford, in Talladega County, was first incorporated in 1873 but lost its charter or disincorporated sometime in the 1880s.
On April 23, 1865, during Croxton's Raid, Union cavalry fought Confederate forces at Munford in what is called the last battle of the Civil War east of the Mississippi River. Andrew Jackson Buttram, killed in the fighting, is remembered as the last Confederate soldier killed east of the Mississippi. A monument to him was unveiled on November 4, 1914, by the John Tyler Morgan Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and rededicated in 2015. Munford was listed as a census-designated place in 2000 and incorporated again in 2002. Sources Wikipedia: Munford, Alabama The Historical Marker Database: Battle of Munford; A.J. Buttram Monument
