Sylacauga, "The Marble City," was first described by Hernando de Soto's chroniclers in 1540, who found the town of Talisi along the Coosa. In 1748 refugee Shawnee from Ohio, led by Peter Chartier, settled the village of Chalakagay nearby; French records of 1759 listed it with 50 Shawnee warriors. The Shawnee joined the Creek Confederacy, fought the United States in the War of 1812 and were forced west in 1836. The name may come from Chalaka-ge, "place of the Chalaka tribe," or from Creek words for "buzzard roost." Men who had fought under Andrew Jackson settled the area, and the town was incorporated as Syllacoga in 1838, when George Washington Stone, later chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, became its first postmaster, and again as Sylacauga in 1887.
In 1820 Dr. Edward Gantt, a physician who had come through with Jackson in 1814, made the first recorded find of marble. The deposit, part of the Murphy Marble Belt, is 32 miles long, a mile and a half wide and 400 feet deep, and is called the world's largest commercial deposit of cream marble. Quarries opened in the 1830s and shipped by the plank road, which was built from Montgomery through Sylacauga to Winterboro in 1852, and in 1906 New York interests bought Gantt's quarry, later the Alabama Marble Company. Sylacauga marble was used in the U.S. Supreme Court building. The Anniston and Atlantic Railroad was completed through town on December 1, 1886, and the first newspaper, the Sylacauga Argus, began in 1887.
