Talladega, the seat of Talladega County, takes its name from the Muscogee word Tvlvtēke, from tvlwv, "town," and vtēke, "border," for its place on the border between Muscogee and Natchez lands. On November 9, 1813, during the Creek War, Andrew Jackson led Tennessee volunteers and allied Indians to victory over the Red Sticks here, rescuing friendly Creeks besieged in Fort Leslie. After the Creek cession of 1832, a U.S. land office at nearby Mardisville, first called Jumper's Spring and named for Tennessee settler Samuel W. Mardis, sold the ceded lands, and the county's early courts met there. Talladega was incorporated in 1835.
At Talladega, from December 13 to 18, 1854, the Alabama Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South resolved to found a college, and rivalry between the eastern and western parts of the state produced two: the East Alabama Male College at Auburn, now Auburn University, and Southern University at Greensboro, now part of Birmingham-Southern College. In 1867 the American Missionary Association helped found Talladega College, and in 1868 its first principal, the Reverend Henry E. Brown, organized the First Congregational Church. In 1913 faculty and townspeople connected with the college, influenced by graduate William Pickens, founded Alabama's first NAACP branch. The Presbyterian Home for Children, planned in 1864 for children of Confederate dead and opened at Tuskegee in 1868, moved to Talladega in 1891. Talladega College was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 23, 1990.
