Verbena, also known as Summerfield, in southeastern Chilton County, is the only community in the United States with that name, given for the wild verbena flowers that grew there. Settlers arrived as early as 1832. When the North-South Railroad was completed with a depot at Verbena in 1870, it gave Montgomery residents an escape from the yellow fever epidemics of the late 19th century, the worst in 1873.
Because of its healthier climate, many prominent Montgomery families built summer homes in Verbena, and the village grew to include two hotels, doctors' offices, a bank, general stores and mineral springs. The poet Sidney Lanier is said to have written "Into the Woods" while camping on nearby Chestnut Creek, which is also known for its gold mines. After Dr. Walter Reed's commission learned how to stop yellow fever around 1900, Verbena's population dwindled, but some of its stately homes and a church built in 1876 are still in use. Verbena was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
