Discover Thorsby

Thorsby was founded in 1895 as Chilton County's first planned community, a Scandinavian colony in the South. Its founders, three Swedes, Theodore T. Thorson, John F. Peterson and John E. Hedberg, and a Norwegian, K. G. Faegre, were immigrants who had first settled in the Midwest and were looking for a milder climate, fertile soil and better health. They formed the Concordia Land and Improvement Association, laid out the town with parks and ten-acre lots that each included a small vineyard, and advertised in northern newspapers the discovery of a southern "utopia." Excursion trains brought newcomers, most of them Swedes, Norwegians, Finns and Danes.

More about Thorsby

The name likely combines Thorson with the Scandinavian suffix "by," meaning town, though it may come from Torsby in Sweden. Within a few years Thorsby had two hotels, a sawmill and two wineries, and its farms grew grapes, strawberries and the peaches for which Chilton County is famous. Locals called it the little "Swede Town." It was incorporated in 1901 and was one of three Scandinavian colonies founded in Alabama around the turn of the century.
