Demopolis, "the People's City," was founded by exiles from Napoleon's France. French expatriates organized in Philadelphia, and on March 3, 1817, Congress allowed them to buy four townships in the Alabama Territory at $2 an acre on condition that they grow grapes and olives. By July 14, 1817, a small party had settled at White Bluff on the Tombigbee River, near its meeting with the Black Warrior, founding the Vine and Olive Colony. Its leaders included Count Lefebvre-Desnouettes, a cavalry general who had ridden in Napoleon's carriage during the Russian campaign, but most of the wealthy members stayed in Philadelphia, and by 1818 the colony had only 69 settlers. A survey in August 1818 showed that their clearing lay outside their grant, and they moved on to found Aigleville and Arcola nearby; the vines and olives never thrived.
American settlers quickly bought the abandoned site. In 1819 the White Bluff Association, later the Company of the Town of Demopolis, with George Strother Gaines as spokesman, bought the bluff and laid out a grid of streets modeled on Philadelphia, many named for trees and national heroes, around a public square dedicated that year; the first lots were sold on April 22, 1819. River trade and later the railroad made the town a commercial center for west Alabama, home to German Jewish merchants among others. Gaineswood, built from 1842 to 1860 by planter Nathan Bryan Whitfield and named for Gaines, is one of the grandest Greek Revival houses in the South. The Demopolis Historic Business District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, contains 57 buildings built between 1843 and 1926, including the Rosenbush Furniture Company building, where Julius Rosenbush founded his business in 1895 and his family ran it until 2002.
