Thomaston was one man's ambition. Around 1830 settlers from the Carolinas and Virginia came looking for fertile land and staked out plantations nearby. In 1890 Dr. Charles Brooks Thomas bought the plantation where the town now stands, hoping to turn his land into a thriving town. He was appointed postmaster in 1892, and the community was named Thomaston in his honor.
The railroad reached Thomaston in 1901, and Thomas had the land surveyed and laid out as a town. It was incorporated that year with 51 residents and Thomas as its first mayor; the town's marker dates this to February 1901, while Wikipedia gives November 15, 1901. Planters Bank and Trust Company opened in 1914, the same year telephone service began, and electricity arrived in 1929. In 1910 the West Alabama Primitive Baptist Association bought land in the town's African American neighborhood for the Thomaston Colored Institute, a church-run school that operated until 1951 and then served as a county public school until 1981; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 30, 2020. In 1949 the town limits were extended and the population jumped to more than 1,000. The Alabama Rural Heritage Foundation, sponsor of the Pepper Jelly Festival, was founded here in 1986, and the town center is listed as the Thomaston Central Historic District.
