Dixons Mills is named for the mills of Joel B. Dixon Sr. (January 11, 1777 – December 23, 1861), a native of Edgecombe County, North Carolina, and one of the early settlers of Marengo County.
Beginning in the late 1820s, Dixon ran a water-powered gristmill at a dam he and his sons built on Mill Creek, along the old road from Linden to Choctaw Corner. The business grew to include a steam-powered sawmill and two steam-powered cotton gins, and the mills stayed in use into the first years of the 20th century. The old mills were still standing in 1923, when they were torn down to build U.S. Route 43; the highway's bridge over Mill Creek now stands where they were. The community still has a post office.
