Newton was created to be a county seat. When the western half of Dale County became Coffee County in 1841, the seat at Daleville was left off-center, and commissioners chose a site south of the Choctawhatchee River, which the legislature named Newton and made the county seat on February 9, 1843. A wooden courthouse and log jail were built in the new town, and Newton was the hub of Dale County until 1870. A board of physicians was set up here in 1856 to license doctors, and The Southern Star, one of the oldest newspapers in the Wiregrass, was first published in Newton in 1867.
Newton was a center of Confederate recruiting during the Civil War. On December 3, 1864, Methodist minister Bill Sketoe was lynched just north of town by Home Guardsmen; local legend holds that the hole dug beneath his feet would never stay filled. In March 1865 a band of Federal irregulars of the 1st Florida Cavalry, led by Joseph Sanders, a Dale County man who had switched sides, tried to burn the courthouse but was ambushed and driven off by local troops. The courthouse burned on March 22, 1869, and in 1870 the county seat moved to Ozark. Newton remained a river port on the Choctawhatchee until the railroad came in 1890, and the Baptist Collegiate Institute operated here from 1898 to 1929; its main building now houses the public library.
