Uniontown was first settled in 1818 and called Woodville, after the first family to settle there. It was incorporated on December 23, 1836. In 1848 one of the earliest plank roads in Alabama, a road paved with wooden planks, was built between Woodville and Demopolis, and the Alabama and Mississippi Railroad came through in 1857.
By 1860 the town had schools for boys and girls and a main street with two department stores, and its economy was closely tied to the surrounding plantations. In 1861 it took the name Uniontown at the suggestion of planter Philip Weaver, whose hometown was Uniontown, Maryland. During the Civil War local men served in the Canebrake Rifle Guards, named for the surrounding Canebrake region, and in the Independent Troop of Uniontown. Uniontown remained an agricultural town after the war. In 1897 the Uniontown Cotton Oil Company, one of the first such plants in Alabama and one of the first industries in Perry County, began making cottonseed oil and meal, and by 1900 the town also had cotton gins, warehouses and a cotton mill.
