Discover Ashburn

Ashburn, an unincorporated community in eastern Loudoun County, was originally part of a rural farming area known as Farmwell. In the 18th and 19th centuries the land was divided among several estates, part of the plantation economy of northern Virginia. Loudoun County was deeply divided during the Civil War, and although no major battles were fought at Ashburn, it was affected by troop movements and raids. In the late 19th century the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad gave local farms and small industries a transportation link, though Ashburn stayed sparsely settled and agricultural well into the 20th century. The old rail corridor is now a regional trail.

More about Ashburn

Major change began after Washington Dulles International Airport opened nearby in 1962. In the 1980s and 1990s suburban neighborhoods and planned communities turned Ashburn into a major residential area of Northern Virginia, and by the early 2000s, with reliable electricity and access to fiber-optic networks, it had become a hub of global internet infrastructure, with the world's highest concentration of data centers, earning the nickname Data Center Alley.
