Discover Manassas

In 1851 a post office and stop on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad were set up at a place called Tudor Hall, after a nearby plantation house. The Manassas Gap Railroad, built west from there toward the Shenandoah Valley, reached Strasburg by 1854, and by the early 1860s the village was known as Manassas Junction. The word first appears as "Manassas Run" on a 1737 survey, but its origin is unknown. Some evidence points to a Jewish innkeeper named Manasseh in the Shenandoah Valley, while others argue for a Native American origin, perhaps related to Massanutten or the Manahoac people.

More about Manassas

In July 1861 the First Battle of Bull Run, or First Manassas, the first major land battle of the Civil War, was fought nearby, and the city marked its 150th anniversary on July 21 to 24, 2011. The Second Battle of Bull Run was fought near Manassas on August 28 to 30, 1862. Manassas Junction was then little more than a railroad crossing, but a strategic one, with lines to Richmond, Washington and the Shenandoah Valley. Despite the two Confederate victories, it was in Union hands for most of the war. After the war the junction grew into the town of Manassas, incorporated in 1873, and in 1894 it replaced Brentsville as the seat of Prince William County. Veterans of both armies gathered there for a peace jubilee in July 1911. Sources Wikipedia: Manassas, Virginia
