Lawrenceburg, the seat of Lawrence County on Shoal Creek, may be the site of Chicasa, where Hernando de Soto's expedition wintered in 1540 and 1541, by one recent theory, though earlier theories place that camp in northern Mississippi. The Chickasaw Nation sold the area to the United States in 1816, and Lawrence County was established in 1817.
David Crockett lived here from 1815 to 1822 by a state marker, or from about 1817 by Wikipedia, serving as justice of the peace, militia colonel and state legislator and running a powder mill and other works on Shoal Creek, now the site of David Crockett State Park. He was one of the commissioners, with Enoch Tucker, Henry Phoenix, Josephus Irvine and M. H. Buchanan, who chose the county seat, though he opposed its location for fear of floods; the first courthouse was built in 1821, and Crockett moved west after a flood destroyed his mill. The present courthouse's cornerstone was laid on June 19, 1905. After World War II the Murray Ohio Manufacturing Company, maker of bicycles and outdoor equipment, moved its operations to Lawrenceburg, building a plant that grew to 42.7 acres under roof. A flood in July 1998 killed two people on Shoal Creek and led to a 10-year flood control project.
