Loretto, in Lawrence County, began in the early 19th century as a stagecoach station called Glen Rock. In 1870 German Catholic immigrants settled the area, and a new town was established soon after. Sources differ on its name, which may come from the Loreto region of Italy or from a nun.
The immigrants founded the Sacred Heart Church of Jesus, whose church, built in 1912, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. When the railroad arrived in the 1880s, Loretto thrived as a lumber town. The Loretto Milling Company, founded in 1895, is still in business, one of the town's oldest family-run firms. The Bank of Loretto building dates to the 1920s and was renovated in 2013, and the old business district also had general stores, a doctor's office, a cobbler, cafes, hotels and a funeral home.
