Ethridge, in Lawrence County, began in the 1880s as a railroad stop called Hudson Springs, a few miles south of the present town, which a store owner persuaded the railroad to rename for Emerson Etheridge, a prominent 19th-century politician and postwar candidate for governor. The present site, where two cattle drovers' roads crossed, got a station in the late 1890s named Wayne Station. After passengers kept ending up at the wrong stop, a local real estate broker convinced the railroad to close the old Ethridge stop and give its name to Wayne Station.
By 1914 Ethridge had about 400 people and thrived as a lumber shipping point, with at least four lumber mills and a finishing mill, five groceries, a meat market, two barbershops, a post office, a hotel and a tire pump factory. The town declined after the crash of 1929 and as trucks replaced trains. Ethridge was incorporated in 1973 and is known for its large community of Swartzentruber Amish.
