Marion, now a northeastern suburb of Meridian, was Lauderdale County's seat from the county's founding until Reconstruction. Named for Revolutionary War leader Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox," it was a prosperous town of planters and enslaved African Americans before the Civil War. In 1840 it had a drugstore, two blacksmith shops, six dry goods stores, academies for girls and boys and at least one newspaper, the Lauderdale Republican.
In 1850 Congress granted land to Alabama and Mississippi to build the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, which bypassed Marion and put its station two miles southwest at McLemore's Old Field, now Meridian. Land values in the county rose 176 percent in the 1850s, and by 1860 the enslaved population had more than doubled, feeding support for secession. On February 16, 1864, Union forces under General William T. Sherman raided Marion and destroyed the railroad to Meridian. In 1870 voters moved the county seat from Marion to fast-growing Meridian. The Marion Confederate Cemetery and the Old Marion Cemetery recall the town's early history. Sources Wikipedia: Marion, Mississippi The Historical Marker Database: Marion C.S.A. Cemetery
