Lauderdale grew up around mineral springs. The Choctaw had a village named Panti on Ponta Creek nearby, and in 1800 the scout Samuel Dale guided some of the first American settlers to the area, among them James Lauderdale of Tennessee, who settled at the springs and named them Lauderdale Springs. Lauderdale served under Andrew Jackson at Talladega during the War of 1812 and was killed at the Battle of New Orleans.
A post office opened in 1837 as Mingo Houma, and when the Mobile and Ohio Railroad was completed nearby, the community was incorporated on March 12, 1856. A resort was built at the springs with a two-story hotel 300 feet long and surrounding cottages, and visitors included Jefferson Davis and Octavia Walton Le Vert. The post office took the name Lauderdale Springs in 1859 and kept it until 1894. During the Civil War the resort became a Confederate hospital that treated soldiers from Shiloh, Corinth, Iuka, Vicksburg and other battles, and those who died were buried in what is now the Lauderdale Springs Confederate-Union Cemetery. Joseph Emory Davis, Jefferson Davis's older brother, stayed here for a time after the siege of Vicksburg, and during Sherman's Meridian Campaign the 32nd Wisconsin Infantry burned Lauderdale Springs.
