Daleville, an unincorporated community on Mississippi Highway 39 in northern Lauderdale County, takes its name from General Sam Dale, the pioneer soldier and scout. Dale was a hero of the War of 1812, famous for the "Canoe Fight" in the Creek War, who rode from Georgia to the Battle of New Orleans with news for Andrew Jackson and later guided Choctaws west to Oklahoma. He died in 1841 at Old Daleville, the settlement now called Lizelia, and was buried nearby; in 1965 his remains were moved to a new grave at Daleville.
Much of the land here was granted by the federal government to John A. McKellar of Perry County, Alabama, on February 27, 1841. In 1865 the Reverend J. L. Cooper founded the Spring Hill Male and Female Institute at Daleville; renamed Cooper Institute in 1873, it was among the first coeducational schools in Mississippi, and Cooper was later elected to the Mississippi Hall of Fame. Notable people from Daleville include mineralogist Jewell Jeannette Glass and William Glenn Terrell, a justice of the Florida Supreme Court from 1923 to 1964.
