New Iberia dates its founding to the spring of 1779, when about 500 colonists from Malaga, Spain, led by Lieutenant Colonel Francisco Bouligny, came up Bayou Teche and settled around what became known as Spanish Lake. The Spanish called the town Nueva Iberia for the Iberian Peninsula, French speakers Nouvelle Iberie, and English-speaking settlers who arrived after the Louisiana Purchase called it New Town. Postmarks from 1802 show the name Nova Iberia, and the federal post office opened in 1814 recognized the name New Iberia. The town was incorporated in 1839 as the Town of Iberia, and the legislature changed its charter to New Iberia in 1847.
Iberia Parish was created in 1868 with New Iberia as its seat, and after years in rented space a courthouse was completed in 1884 on what is now Bouligny Plaza; it served until the present courthouse on Iberia Street was built in 1940. In 1889 the Wakefields, a Black family of New Iberia, fled to New Orleans after their son was lynched by a white mob; the father, Samuel Wakefield, was a former state senator.
