Discover Mandeville

In 1829 Bernard Xavier de Marigny de Mandeville, a New Orleans planter and legislator from one of Louisiana's most prominent families, bought a large tract on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain east of Bayou Castine and established a plantation he called Fontainebleau, now Fontainebleau State Park. The land had been granted to earlier settlers under British and Spanish rule, and Congress confirmed his title by a private act of March 15, 1832. In 1834 Marigny laid out a town on his land west of the bayou and auctioned lots in New Orleans, promoting it as a resort for city residents across the lake.

More about Mandeville

Mandeville was incorporated in 1840 and became a popular summer retreat for well-to-do New Orleanians escaping the city's heat. Daily steamboat service between the two began in the mid-19th century, and by the end of the Victorian era it was a weekend destination for the New Orleans middle class as well. In the late 19th century it was home to the Harvey School, a college preparatory school. From 1909 to 1918 an interurban railway known locally as the Motor Road linked the lakefront steamship pier with Abita Springs and Covington, its powerhouse also lighting the town's streets. The first span of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway opened to traffic in 1956. Sources Wikipedia: Mandeville, Louisiana
