Among the early settlers of the area was John Gause. With his younger brother, Wesley Coke Asbury Gause, Judge Wingate and others, he left Shallotte, North Carolina, on February 18, 1836, and reached Pearlington, Mississippi, on April 14. Wesley's family stayed there, while John and his family crossed the Pearl River and built a log cabin on the west bank. He started a lumber mill in what became Slidell, and his trips between the mill and home created the road now known as Gause Boulevard. The cabin stood until the late 1990s, and a small family burial plot where John lies between his two wives, Lydia Russ and Johanna Frederica VanHeemskerk, remains.

More about Slidell

Slidell was founded on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain in 1882 and 1883, during construction of the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad from New Orleans to Meridian, Mississippi. It was named for John Slidell, the American politician and Confederate envoy to France, and was chartered by the Louisiana legislature in 1888. Around 1910 Slidell entered a period of economic and industrial growth. A large creosote plant was built, along with a lumber mill, a shipyard and the Fritz Salmen Brickyard, a major brick producer later called St. Joe Brick. The creosote plant burned to the ground in 1915 and was rebuilt on Bayou Lane. After Interstates 10, 59 and 12 were built, Slidell became a major crossroads for travelers across the Gulf States.
