Discover Whitesburg

Whitesburg, in Carroll County, lies near the home of William McIntosh, the Coweta Creek leader who fought at Autossee and Horseshoe Bend and in the Seminole wars as a brigadier general. On December 11, 1821, a treaty setting a new boundary between the Cherokee and Creek nations was drafted and signed at his home; its northern line was later used in the first survey of Carroll County in 1826 and 1827.

More about Whitesburg

In February 1825 McIntosh gathered a small group of Lower Creek chiefs at Indian Springs, where they signed a treaty ceding the Creek lands in Georgia. The Creek National Council condemned him for violating its law protecting communal land, and a large party of warriors carried out his execution at his plantation on Acorn Bluff, sparing the women, children and white men there. McIntosh is buried at the site, now the McIntosh Reserve, part of a square mile around McIntosh's Ferry that was held back from the land lottery as a possible town site. After Creek removal, settlers moved in from the east, many as subsistence farmers. Whitesburg was established in 1873, named for railroad official A. J. White, and incorporated by the General Assembly in 1874.
