Discover Carrollton

Carrollton is the seat of Carroll County, chartered in 1826 and governed at first by an inferior court of five elected justices. In 1829 the justices voted to move the county seat from a site near present-day Sandhill to a new one about eight miles southwest. They meant to call it Troupville, for former governor George Troup, but Troup was out of favor with the state government, and in December 1829 the General Assembly incorporated the town as Carrollton, for Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the last living signer of the Declaration of Independence. The town was surveyed in 1830 around a central square, later named Adamson Square for judge and congressman William C. Adamson.

More about Carrollton

Travel was difficult until the railroad arrived in 1874, and Carrollton stayed largely a frontier town until well after the Civil War. The railroad let farmers ship their cotton to distant markets and helped early water-powered textile mills grow into an industry that kept the town prosperous into the 20th century. By 1900 it had running water, electric lights and telephones, and it began paving its streets in 1918. In 1906 Carrollton was chosen for the Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical School, which became West Georgia College in 1934 and is now the University of West Georgia. In May 1964 Robert F. Kennedy came to dedicate the campus's Kennedy Chapel. Sources Wikipedia: Carrollton, Georgia
