Bowdon lies near the center of the last land in Georgia owned by the Creek Nation, a tract of about 550 square miles, 80 miles long and up to 10 miles wide. When Carroll County was surveyed in 1827, surveyors found that some districts were still Creek territory, beyond the limits of the treaties of January 24 and March 31, 1826, and a further treaty signed at the Creek Agency on November 15, 1827, ceded the remaining Creek lands within Georgia.
Bowdon College was established in 1857, and the town was incorporated on January 1, 1859, and named for Alabama congressman Franklin Welsh Bowdon. The college was Georgia's fifth chartered college and its first coeducational one. It closed briefly when nearly all its students joined the Confederate army; its marker says the president, Charles A. McDaniel, and 128 of its 144 students died in the war. Afterward it was one of five Georgia colleges giving free tuition to poor and disabled Confederate veterans, and when that program ended in 1869 the trustees voted to admit women. It became Bowdon State Normal School under a law of August 1919, lost state funding, ran as a junior college from 1934 to 1936 and then closed. The Bowdon Railway served the town from 1910 to 1963. On August 21, 1995, Atlantic Southeast Airlines Flight 529 crashed between Bowdon and Carrollton.
