LaFayette, the seat of Walker County, was founded in 1835 as Chattooga, seat of the new county named for former U.S. Senator Freeman Walker. In 1836 it was renamed for the Marquis de Lafayette, the French nobleman who fought in the American Revolution.
On June 18, 1864, during Sherman's Atlanta campaign, Union Colonel Louis D. Watkins occupied LaFayette with about 450 men of the 4th, 6th and 7th Kentucky Cavalry to rid the area of guerrilla bands, making his headquarters in the courthouse on the square. About 3 a.m. on June 24, Confederate Brigadier General Gideon J. Pillow, moving north with about 1,600 cavalry to burn railroad bridges over Chickamauga Creek, attacked. Watkins's men barricaded their quarters and held out, but by midmorning they were short of water and ammunition. A Union picket who escaped found Colonel John T. Croxton's 4th Kentucky Mounted Infantry camped at Rock Springs Church, eight miles north, and about 8:30 a.m. Croxton's men surprised Pillow's force, stampeding many horses. Pillow withdrew, having lost 155 men to the Union's 64. Sources Wikipedia: LaFayette, Georgia The Historical Marker Database: The Battle of LaFayette (Georgia Historical Commission)
