Trion, in Chattooga County, grew around the first cotton mill in northwest Georgia. Three Walker County businessmen, Andrew P. Allgood, Spencer S. Marsh and Colonel W. K. Briers, organized the Trion factory on October 12, 1845, and chose the name Trion to mark their three-way partnership. The mill began production in 1847, when a post office called Trion Factory opened, and the Georgia General Assembly incorporated the town in 1862.
The mill has had few shutdowns: an epidemic in 1858, the arrival of Sherman's army in 1864, which closed it until the war's end, a fire, which Wikipedia dates to 1875 and the mill's marker to April 10, 1876, that shut it for six months, and a six-week strike in 1934. It was rebuilt and became what is now Mount Vernon Mill No. 3. Three families owned the mill through its first 150 years: the Allgoods from 1845 to 1912, the B. D. Riegel family from 1912 to 1987 and the R. B. Pamplin family from 1987. The post office name was shortened to Trion in 1904.
