Chickamauga, in Walker County, lies along Chickamauga Creek, where the Chickamauga Cherokee farmed and hunted until their forced removal on the Trail of Tears in 1838. When the Cherokee Nation was divided into districts in 1820, Crawfish Springs became the capital of the Chickamauga District, and after removal Walker County's first court met in the former Cherokee courthouse there. During the War of 1812, 500 Cherokee warriors from the area fought beside Andrew Jackson at Horseshoe Bend.
In 1836 James Gordon of Gwinnett County established a plantation at Crawfish Springs and built a gristmill two miles east on Chickamauga Creek; Lee and Gordon's Mill held the area's first general store near a blacksmith shop and stagecoach stop. From 1840 to 1847 Gordon built the Doric-columned brick house now known as the Gordon-Lee Mansion, overlooking the springs. The Battle of Chickamauga, fought on September 19 and 20, 1863, involved more than 150,000 Union and Confederate soldiers. Union General William Rosecrans made his headquarters at the Gordon-Lee house before the battle, and during and after it the house and nearby buildings sheltered the wounded, with many Union doctors staying behind after the Confederate victory. Thirsty soldiers of both sides drank from Crawfish Springs. Sources Wikipedia: Chickamauga, Georgia
