Apopka, in Orange County, was first home to the Acuera, members of the Timucua confederation, who had disappeared by 1730, probably from diseases brought by Spanish colonists. Refugees from Alabama and Georgia who formed the Seminole people came next and called the place Ahapopka, from words meaning "potato" and "eating place." By the 1830s the settlement had about 200 people and was the birthplace of the Seminole leader Coacoochee, known as Wild Cat.
After the Second Seminole War the Armed Occupation Act of 1842 forced the surviving Native residents to abandon their village and flee deeper into the peninsula. American settlers built a trading center on the old village site, large enough by 1857 to support a Masonic lodge, which in 1859 built a meeting place at what is now Main Street and Alabama Avenue; the community was long known simply as "The Lodge." The settlers near the Lodge were largely cut off during the Civil War, but the area rebounded afterward, and railroad lines brought a population boom. Sources Wikipedia: Apopka, Florida
