Orlando's downtown has a history separate from the region's theme-park development. The city's downtown account traces its beginnings to the 1850s and its incorporation to 1875. Historic-district documentation describes a later nineteenth-century commercial center shaped by rail connections and the citrus trade. Residential development around Lake Eola followed during the 1880s, linking the lake to the growth of the city rather than to a later resort landscape.
Lake Eola's public role developed over time. Jacob Summerlin purchased land in the area in 1873 and donated land for public use in 1883. The lake became a city park in 1888. The city's history identifies it as a sinkhole lake fed by an aquifer, an example of the geology beneath central Florida's familiar surface scenery. Several recognizable features belong to different periods. Swans arrived in 1922. Eola House, built in 1924 in the Mediterranean Revival style, later became part of the park's public facilities. The central fountain dates to 1957; it was subsequently named for Linton E. Allen. These layers make the park a record of changing civic priorities as well as a gathering place. The city's Lake Eola history and the historic-district record are useful companions for exploring downtown: one explains the public landscape, while the other places surrounding residential growth within Orlando's railroad and citrus-era development.
