Gadsden, the seat of Etowah County, began about 1825 as Double Springs, where John Riley, of mixed Native and European ancestry, built a house by two springs and used it as a stagecoach stop on the Huntsville-to-Rome route; it still stands as the city's oldest building. In 1840 brothers Gabriel and Asenath Hughes bought the house and much of the land between Lookout Mountain, the Coosa River and Wills Creek, and proposed a railroad from Savannah to Nashville through it. On July 4, 1845, Captain James Lafferty brought the steamboat Coosa to the settlement, and residents named the town for Colonel James Gadsden of South Carolina, later known for the Gadsden Purchase.
On May 2, 1863, during Streight's Raid, a young woman named Emma Sansom braved Union sharpshooters to guide General Nathan Bedford Forrest's cavalry to a ford across the flooded Black Creek, letting Forrest keep up his pursuit until Streight surrendered. In 1867 the legislature created Baine County with Gadsden as its seat and incorporated the town; the county was renamed Etowah in 1868. By the late 19th century Gadsden was a major Coosa River port, second in importance to Mobile, and a center of heavy industry. Its population peaked in 1960, and most of its major industries closed in the 1970s and 1980s. Downtown redevelopment won it first place in the U.S. Conference of Mayors' City Livability Awards in 2000.
