Walnut Grove, in western Etowah County, was part of Blount County until it was included in Baine County, now Etowah, in 1866. It was settled by the Battles family in 1813 and by the Morton and Carnes families in 1823. Around 1825 it was known as Thomas Crossroads, for landowner Jordan D. Thomas; in 1848 it was named Cornelius, for postmaster Harvey Cornelius; and in 1849 it became Walnut Grove.
The town was burned during the Civil War. In 1884 the legislature established Walnut Grove College, the first college preparatory school for both young men and women in northeast Alabama. During its 15 years the town grew to 13 stores, including a drugstore with a soda fountain, and the college closed in 1899 as public high schools opened in the county. Walnut Grove was incorporated in 1886, with Colonel W. T. Murphree as its first mayor. In 1917 high-grade magnesium was found near Silver Gap at Red Mountain, on the town's western edge, and it was mined and refined in the 1930s and 1940s. Sources Wikipedia: Walnut Grove, Alabama
