York, legend says, began at a blacksmith shop called Old Anvil at a crossroads a few miles northwest of the present city. Around 1833 settlers east of today's York, on the old stagecoach road between Livingston and Gaston, named their community New York Station. The two communities merged in 1838 and gradually grew toward the railroad, which took business away from the stagecoach line.
In the 1850s a train station and hotel were built at New York Station, and the name was shortened to York Station in 1861. When it was found that another Alabama community bore that name, "Station" was dropped too, and the town was incorporated as York on April 6, 1881. Over the years the Southern Railway, the Alabama Great Southern and the Alabama, Tennessee and Northern railroads all ran through York, and from 1920 to 1980 it was the largest town in Sumter County. In 1985 local citizens led by York native Dorothy "Tut" Altman Riddick founded the Coleman Center for the Arts in old downtown buildings on Avenue A, including the original Bank of York. It has grown into a contemporary arts center with an internationally recognized artist-in-residence program focused on community-driven public art.
