Epes has its origins in a French fort. In January 1736, Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, governor of Louisiana, had Swiss officer Joseph Christophe de Lusser build Fort Tombecbé on an 80-foot bluff above the Tombigbee River to support a campaign against the Chickasaw. For 26 years the French used it to check British expansion and as a trading post that strengthened their ties with the Choctaw, their most powerful ally in the region. Under the 1763 Treaty of Paris they surrendered it to Britain in November 1763, and the British renamed it Fort York.
After a 1768 truce between the Choctaw and Creek, the British abandoned the fort. The Choctaw ceded a small parcel including it to Spain in 1792 or 1793, and in 1794 the Spanish built a smaller earthen fort there called Fort Confederación. The 1795 Treaty of San Lorenzo then gave the land north of the 31st parallel, including the fort, to the United States, marking the end of the European colonial era in the region. The modern town, first called Epes Station, grew up on the railroad and was incorporated as Epes in 1899. Sources Wikipedia: Epes, Alabama
