Discover Fort Davis

Fort Davis, on U.S. Route 29 about 13 miles south of Tuskegee, is named not for a military post but for one of its founders. Richard T. Davis, a farmer, storekeeper and the community's first postmaster, married Mary C. Fort, and their first son was named Fort Madison Davis for his mother's family.

More about Fort Davis

When the Savannah, Americus and Montgomery Railroad came through in the late 19th century, Fort Davis and his brother Hubert T. Davis laid out the town in lots. It was first named Hamilton but was later renamed Fort Davis for its founder, and several families from the nearby Cotton Valley community moved to be near the tracks. The first depot was built in 1892; after a fire, the present depot was built in 1904. The railroad served Fort Davis from 1892 until 1985, and the tracks were taken up beginning in 1987. The depot, deeded to the Fort Davis Historical Group in 1975, remains a landmark for southern Macon and northern Bullock counties and one of the last surviving buildings of the old SA&M line.
