Tuskegee Institute is the community around Tuskegee University. The school was founded on July 4, 1881, as the Tuskegee Normal School for Colored Teachers, the result of a bargain in the 1880 election: former Confederate colonel Wilbur F. Foster promised that if Lewis Adams, a local Black leader and former slave, delivered Black votes for him, he would push the state to create a school for Black students in Macon County. Adams did, and with banker George W. Campbell he secured $2,000 from the state for teachers' salaries, though nothing for land or buildings. On the recommendation of Hampton Institute's principal, they hired 25-year-old Booker T. Washington.
More about Tuskegee Institute
Washington began classes in a rundown church and shanty, and in 1882 he bought a 100-acre former plantation for the campus. He built a work-study program in which students learned trades and agriculture, raised support from national philanthropists and worked with Julius Rosenwald on model rural schools for Black children across the South. Inventor and teacher George Washington Carver made his home and career at the school, which, later Tuskegee Institute, is now Tuskegee University.
During World War II Tuskegee trained the Tuskegee Airmen, primarily African American military pilots and support personnel who formed the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group and earned praise for protecting American bombers in combat.
